Background

Here is a compilation of the events that led up to the registration of Fujisan as a World Heritage Site, and the initiatives taken thereafter.

Events Leading to Registration as a World Heritage Site

2005

Dec. 19 The prefectures of Yamanashi and Shizuoka inaugurated the Joint Council for the Registration of Fujisan as a World Cultural Heritage Site.

2006

Examination of the "Tentative List Proposal".

Nov. 10 The governors of Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures submitted the Tentative List Proposal to the Director General of the Agency for Cultural Affairs.

2007

Jan. 23 The Agency for Cultural Affairs selected additional assets as candidates for inclusion
in Japan’s Tentative World Heritage List.

Jan. 30 The Japanese government submitted the tentative list to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, with Fujisan included in the list.

Jun. 27 The inclusion of Fujisan in the tentative list was announced during the 31st session
of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.

2011

Jul. 27

The prefectures of Yamanashi and Shizuoka submitted a recommendation proposal
to the Agency for Cultural Affairs.

2012

Jan. 25 The prefectures of Yamanashi and Shizuoka inaugurated the Fujisan World Cultural Heritage Council, the Fujisan World Cultural Heritage Council Working Group, and the Fujisan World Cultural Heritage Academic Committee.

Jan. 26 The Japanese government submitted the recommendation to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

Aug. 29 to Sep. 5 An inspector from the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) conducted a field survey on Fujisan.

2013

Apr. 30 ICOMOS recommended that Fujisan, excluding the Mihonomatsubara pine tree grove,
be added to the World Heritage List.

 

Jun. 6 The prefectures of Yamanashi and Shizuoka inaugurated the Fujisan Advisory Committee for Admission Fees.

Jun. 22 During the deliberations at the 37th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee,
it was decided that Fujisan, including the Mihonomatsubara pine tree grove, would be registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site.

Jun. 26 The decision taken during the 37th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee was adopted, and Fujisan was formally registered under the name "Fujisan, Sacred Place and Source of Artistic Inspiration".

 

 

Initiatives After Registration as a World Heritage Site

2014

Mar. 31 The Joint Council for the Registration of Fujisan as a World Cultural Heritage Site had achieved its prescribed objective and was consequently disbanded.

 

Nov.

Inquiry to ICOMOS
It was recommended that the advice of ICOMOS be obtained with regard to the vision and strategies pertaining to the decision of the World Heritage Committee. On Nov. 28, 2014, the Director General of the Agency for Cultural Affairs sent an inquiry to ICOMOS, requesting comments and advice on the proposed vision and strategies (preliminary draft dated Sep. 2014, excluding sample initiatives).

 

Dec. 24 The vision and strategies for the Fujisan World Cultural Heritage Site were formulated and adopted at the 5th Fujisan World Cultural Heritage Council meeting.

 

2015

Jan.

Comments from ICOMOS
Comments pertaining to the proposed vision and strategies were received
on January 30, 2015.

 

Oct. 23 The proposed revisions to the Comprehensive Preservation Management Plan, which reflect the said vision and strategies, were approved during the 7th Fujisan World Cultural Heritage Council meeting, which was convened to discuss the State of Conservation Report to be submitted to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre upon receipt of request.

 

2016

Jan. 27 (Paris Time)

The Japanese government submitted the State of Conservation Reports to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

 

Jul.

The State of Conservation Report was deliberated at the 40th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.

    by the Agency for Cultural Affairs and the prefectures of Yamanashi and Shizuoka.
