Promotion of the Removal of Utility Poles

Shizuoka Prefecture is currently working on projects based on the plan for promoting the removal of utility poles, mainly in parts of cities with a high demand for electricity and communications. In particular, the second stage of Shizuoka Prefecture's plan to remove utility poles prioritized removal from 25 locations in cities and towns situated in the vicinity of Fujisan (8.2km in total). As of 2015, the removal of utility poles had been completed in 14 of these locations (3.0km in total).

In addition, the Review Working Group for the Promotion of Removal of Utility Poles in the Vicinity of Fujisan was established in April 2014 under the Shizuoka Prefecture Utility Pole Removal Promotion Council. This group was established so that all concerned parties can examine methods for the efficient removal of utility poles and make necessary adjustments, using advice obtained from experts. It is aimed at making progress in the removal of utility poles in order to preserve the pleasant scenic landscapes around Fujisan.

Policies for the efficient removal of utility poles in places that urgently need it, such as the area along the Miho Komagoe Prefectural Road and the area around the Shiraito no Taki waterfalls, were consolidated by this working group. The removal was implemented in specific spots, with a limited area and scope of removal required to preserve the pleasant scenic landscapes.

Yamanashi Prefecture declared its target to remove utility poles along an area stretching 4.3km in the northern foothills of Fujisan over the course of four years from 2011 to 2014. The results exceeded the prefecture's initial target of 4.3km; instead, utility poles were removed from an area covering 7.5km.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport decided on a project to remove utility poles from an area covering 7.2km in the northern foothills of Fujisan from 2013 to 2014. The planning and execution of the project are currently underway.

Coordination with related agencies is also underway for the removal of utility poles along the area where the National Route 138 highway is being expanded.
