Research into the Pilgrimage Route

We have compiled together the areas and pathways of the pilgrimage route that have been identified or estimated to be active during the 19th century based on the independent surveys and research conducted up to the present by the prefectures of Yamanashi and Shizuoka, as well as related cities, towns, and villages. Areas that require surveys and research in the future have also been consolidated, all of which are marked on an up-to-date map.

Designating the pathways of the pilgrimage route gets more and more difficult as time goes by owing to the effects of urbanization carried out in the past; therefore, it is necessary to systematically push forward early on the conduct of surveys and research by gathering documentary records, carrying out interviews, implementing field surveys, taking measurements, and conducting investigations through excavations.

The prefectures of Yamanashi and Shizuoka, as well as related cities, towns, and villages, have established survey committees, which have been making efforts to gather and keep track of related documentation, in addition to conducting research studies on the pilgrimage route.
